  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and this is the show that brings you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme. The last two shows were all about remembering Stephen Sondheim. We will get back to his legacy after the new year. Till then, we will get back to random themes. This week’s theme is all about The Sky.

  • We are going to start off with John Rubenstein singing “Corner of the Sky” from the original production of Pippin. Then Jenn Colella relates her flying obsession in “Me and the Sky” from the musical Come From Away which recounts the time directly after the twin towers were struck. We are going to follow that with Richard Kiley as the pilot singing “I Need Air” from Lerner and Loewe’s movie, The Little Prince. Concluding this first set will be Barbra Streisand singing “A Piece of Sky” from the movie Yentl. Here’s “Corner of the Sky” from Pippin.

  • Our theme today is The Sky and you just heard “Corner of the Sky” from Pippin, “Me and the Sky” from Come From Away, “I Need Air” from The Little Prince, and “A Piece of Sky” from Yentl.

Then Bea Arthur will treat us to “The Man in the Moon” from Mame. Next, we will hear the beautiful and haunting “Moonfall” from The Mystery of Edwin Drood. And finally in this set, Betty Hutton as Annie Oakley will serenade us with “I Got the Sun in the Morning” and the Moon at Night from the movie version of Annie Get Your Gun.  Here’s Uncle Fester with “The Moon and Me”.

  • And now to conclude our SKY themed show, Starlight Express was an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical about trains performed by actors on roller skates. It ran for 18 years in London and 2 years on Broadway. What I find most interesting is that a special theater was built in Bochum, Germany  in 1988 specifically for Starlight Express and was still running until 2021 before stopping due to COVID, that’s 33 yrs for this show. We are going to hear a version of “I Am the Starlight” by rock musicians Richie Havens and Peter Hewlett. Then the song “Tonight” from the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story. And finally, coming back to The Sky with Ben Platt singing “For Forever” from Dear Evan Hansen. Here’s “I Am the Starlight” from Starlight Express.
