  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • Before we get to today’s theme, which is songs added to the movie version of Broadway shows, I need to tell you about a joyful autobiography that I recently read, Mel Brooks - All About Me! - My Remarkable Life In Show Business. And joyful is the correct term to describe this book.  Mel Brooks goes through his entire life, giving you details of each stage of his life; from growing up, his stint in the army, television, comedy albums, movies, Broadway, to the present. He gives insights into the luck, talent, determination, and ingenuity that got him through each stage and his joy shows through and is infectious. You will laugh, smile, and perhaps tear up a bit as you read. I highly recommend the book, Mel Brooks - All About Me!

  • I”ve been thinking about this theme for a while and when my sister independently came up with the same theme, I felt it was time to do it. Our theme today, Added To Movies, is about songs that were not in the original Broadway show but added later to the movie version.  Sometimes the additions work and sometimes they don’t. Often they are added just to the closing credits and sometimes you get the feeling that the song is only added so that the composer can try to win an Oscar. We are going to listen to all of these types.

  • We are going to start off with the movie version of Hello Dolly. Composer Jerry Herman was never satisfied with the original opening song, “I Put My Hand In” so he wrote a new song tailored to Barbra Streisand’s gifts as a singer, “Just Leave Everything to Me”. Then, the movie version of Grease had several new songs which have since been incorporated into the stage show. We are going to hear John Travolta sing “Sandy”. Then, Andrew Lloyd Webber added a song for Madonna to sing in Evita most likely to try to win an Oscar, which he did. We will hear “You Must Love Me”. And finally, Marc Shaiman added a song for Zac Efron to sing in Hairspray called “Ladies Choice”. Here’s Barbra Streisand with “Just Leave Everything to Me”.

  • We are listening to songs that were added to the movie version of Broadway shows and you just heard “Just Leave Everything to Me” from Hello Dolly, “Sandy” from Grease, “You Must Love Me” from Evita, and “Ladies Choice” from Hairspray.

  • You are listening to “well, That’s Show Biz!” and our theme today is Added To Movies, songs that were added to the movie version of Broadway shows. Starting off our second set is the romantic song, “Loving You” that was added to the movie version of Mame so that the great Robert Preston would have a solo to sing. Then, to take advantage of the New York City setting for the movie version of Godspell, the beautiful song, “Beautiful City” was added and has since been added to the stage show. Next, Richard Rodgers wrote two new songs for The Sound of Music, lyrics as well as his writing partner, Oscar Hammerstein, had passed away, before the film was made. We are going to hear the first of these, “I Have Confidence”. And finally in this set, there were three good new songs written for the movie version of Dreamgirls. We will hear the song, “Listen” that was written for Beyonce to sing. Here’s Robert Preston with “Loving You” from Mame.

  • You are listening to [Station ID]. Today’s theme on “well, That’s Show Biz!” is songs that were added to shows for the movie version. Starting off the third set, Meredith Wilson’s The Unsinkable Molly Brown is a fiction about the real life Molly Brown who survived the Denver floods and the Titanic. The rollicking song and dance, “He’s My Friend” was added to the movie. Next we are going to head back to Grease to hear the song that was added for Olivia Newton-John, “Hopelessly devoted to You” that has since been incorporated into the stage show. Then we’ve already heard “Listen” which was one of three good songs that were added to Dreamgirls. Another is “Patience” sung by Keith Robinson, Anika Noni Rose, and Eddie Murphy. And finally, we are going to go back to Hairspray to hear the rousing song “Come So Far (Got So Far to Go)” that is sung by Elijah Kelly, Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, and Nikki Blonsky over the closing credits. • For our final set, we have three iconic songs that were not in their original productions. The song, “Maybe This Time” was written in 1964 by Kander and Ebb for actress Kaye Ballard. Liza Minelli had recorded it twice before it was included in the movie version of Cabaret. Then, in 1973 Dolly Parton wrote the song “I Will Always Love You” as a farewell to her mentor Porter Wagoner as she decided to pursue a solo career. It was a hit for her on the Billboard Country Chart twice, the second time when it was included for the ending of the film version of The Best Little  Whorehouse in Texas. Many people only know of the song because Whitney Houston had a monster hit with it when she recorded it for the movie The Bodyguard. We are going to hear Dolly’s wistful original version. And finally, the French song, “Mon Homme”, “My Man” was written in 1920 and was popularized in the Ziegfeld Follies by Fanny Brice. It was covered by Barbra Streisand on her 1965 album, My Name Is Barbra, and included in the finale of the 1968 film version of Funny Girl. Here are, Liza Minnelli with “Maybe This Time”, Dolly Parton with “I Will Always Love You”, and Barbra Streisand with “Mon Homme”, “My Man”.
