Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Tomorrow is Martin Luther King jr. Day and so to honor him, our theme today is EMPOWERMENT. There was more to Martin Luther King jr. than simply Civil Rights and we are going to touch on some of the issues that he fought for and later on in the hour we will hear the last 5 minutes of his “I Have A Dream Speech”.
We are going to open our first set with the song “Freedom” from Shenandoah, a musical which takes place during the Civil War. Next, the musical Urinetown is a satirical look at capitalism and social irresponsibility among other concepts. During a 20 yr drought, to protect the water supply, the townspeople are legally only allowed to urinate in public toilets and must pay a fee to pee. Those who fail to adhere to this law disappear and are never seen again. From Urinetown, we will hear the song “Run, Freedom. Run!”. Then, Martin Luther King was a strong supporter of labor unions calling them “America’s first anti-poverty program”. The musical Newsies is about a strike by newsboys in the late 1800s. As they go on strike, the newsboys sing “Seize the Day”. And finally, we are going to hear Lea Michele from the new Broadway cast recording of Funny Girl sing “Don’t Rain On My Parade”. Here’s “Freedom” from Shenandoah as we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King jr.

Then in the song “I’m Here” from the musical The Color Purple, Celie finally realizes her inner strength and love. And finally in this set, we will hear Idina Menzel from Wicked singing about “Defying Gravity”. Here’s Brian Stokes Mitchell with “Make Them Hear You” from Ragtime.
