  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • Love songs are a staple of musicals and with Valentine’s Day coming up, I figured we could do two shows of love songs. Now, there are different types of love songs: happy love songs, longing for love songs, unrequited love love songs, and non-love love songs for example. We are going to showcase many of these different types.

  • We are going to start off with a happy love song from The Pajama Game. John Raitt & Janis Paige proclaim their love for each other with “There Once Was a Man”. A trivia note, John Raitt is rocker Bonnie Raitt’s father. Then a “we just met” love song, “Ten Minutes Ago” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s TV musical, Cinderella. This is from the 1965 version starring Lesley Ann Warren and Stuart Damon. Some of you of a certain age will remember Stuart Damon as Alan Quartermain from the soap, General Hospital. After that, a questioning love song from Fiddler on the Roof, “Do You Love Me?’. And finally, from Guys and Dolls, sister Sarah Brown drunkenly realizes she’s in love with gambler Sky Masterson in the delightful “If I Were a Bell”.  Here’s “There Once Was a Man” from The Pajama Game.

  •  We are listening to different types of love songs today on “well, That’s Show Biz!” and you just heard “There Once Was a Man” from The Pajama Game, “Ten Minutes Ago” from Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, “Do You Love Me?” from Fiddler On The Roof, and “If I Were a Bell” from Guys And Dolls.

Next, Freddy Einsford Hill declares his love for Eliza Doolittle with “On the Street Where You Live” from My Fair Lady. Then, Marius, Cosette, and Eponine sing about their love triangle meeting with “A Heart Full of Love” from Les Miserables. And finally, Bernadette Peters sings about her feelings with the gorgeous “Unexpected Song” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song and Dance. Here’s “Without Love” from Hairspray.

  • We are going to open the third set with the declarative love song from Grease, “You’re the One That I Want”. This is from the 2007 Broadway revival. Then, the delightful musical Baby is about three different couples, one still in college, one in their 30s, and one in their 40s, all expecting a baby. The character Danny from the young couple sings of his love with the delicately beautiful song “I Chose Right”. Next, a non-love love song from Jerry Herman’s Mack & Mable as Robert Preston, as old time movie director Mack Sennet, sings  “I Won’t Send Roses” to his discovery, actress Mabel Normand. And finally, Ellen Greene as Audrey, discovers Rick Moranis as Seymour Krelbourne, with “Suddenly, Seymour” from the movie version of Little Shop of Horrors. Here’s “The One That I Want” from Grease.
