  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and this is the show that brings you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • March is Women’s History Month, and so to honor the month, today’s show is all about Broadway Divas. The term Divas is often used to mean any talented female performer but I don’t think anyone is going to argue with my choices. We are going to open the show with the queen of Broadway Diva’s, perhaps the woman most of us think of when we hear the term Broadway Diva. We are going to start off with Ethel Merman singing “You’re the Top” originally from Cole Porter’s Anything Goes. Next we are going to hear Patti LuPone From her new Live album, Don’t Monkey with Broadway, singing “Easy to Be Hard” from Hair. Then, when Angela Lansbury was given a copy of the song “Beauty and The Beast” and offered the role of voicing Mrs. Potts, she initially turned it down saying that the song was inappropriate for her voice.  They had inadvertently sent her the Celine Dion / Peabo Bryson version. We will hear the magical “Beauty and the Beast” by Angela Lansbury. And finally, we will hear Bernadette Peters with her version of “Broadway Baby” from Follies. Here’s Diva Ethel Merman, “You’re the Top”.

  • For Women’s History Month we are celebrating with Broadway Divas and you just heard Ethel Merman with “You’re the Top”, Patti LuPone with “Easy to Be Hard”, Angela Lansbury with “Beauty and the Beast” and Bernadette Peters with “Broadway Baby”.

We will follow that with Julie Andrews singing Henry Mancini’s “Le Jazz Hot” from Victor / Victoria. Then we will hear Gwen Verdon sing “A Little Brains – A Little Talent” from Damn Yankees. And our final Broadway Diva in this set is 6-time and counting Tony Award winning Audra McDonald with “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” from The Sound of Music. Here’s Liza Minnelli with “Ring Them Bells”.
