  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • During the winter, we always look for things to do indoors. And as the winter leaves us, we begin to look for things to do outdoors. This week’s theme is GAMES & PASTIMES.

  • We are going to open the first set with Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, as King Arthur and his Queen Guenevere,  singing “What Do the Simple Folk Do?” from Camelot. Then, the show Chess was about, you guessed it, a Chess tournament set during the Cold War. We are going to hear “Nobody’s Side” from Chess in Concert. Next two songs about the pastime of kite flying. First, Gary Burghdoff, as Charlie Brown, sings about trying to fly his “Kite” from You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. And then the cast of Mary Poppins makes the suggestion to “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”. Here’s “What Do the Simple Folk Do?” from Camelot.

  • We are playing GAMES & PASTIMES today on “well, That’s Show Time” and you just heard “What Do the Simple Folk Do?” from Camelot, “Nobody’s Side” from Chess, “Kite” from You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” from Mary Poppins.

  • Today on “wee, That’s Show Biz!”, we are playing GAMES & PASTIMES as our theme, there are many card and gambling activities and in the musical Woman of The Year, Harry Guardino, as Sam Craig,  and the other comic strip artists play “The Poker Game” as they discuss their nemesis, journalist Tess Harding. The way this song was recorded, it goes right into the next song, “See You in the Funny Papers”. Since drawing is also a pastime we are going to hear that song as well as cartoonist Craig decides to make fun of Tess Harding by drawing her as a comic strip cat. We will go from there to the Ascot horse races in England with “Ascot Gavotte” from My Fair Lady. And we will conclude this set with Sky Masterson betting his life on a roll of the dice with “Luck Be a Lady” from Guys and Dolls. Here’s “The Poker Game” from Woman of The Year.

  • You just heard “The Poker Game” and “See You in the Funny Papers” from Woman of The Year, “Ascot Gavotte” from My Fair Lady, and “Luck Be a Lady” from Guys and Dolls as we play GAMES & PASTIMES today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”

  • You are listening to “well, That’s Show Biz!” on [station ID]. As Spring approaches, people are starting to do more things outdoors and so today we are focusing on songs about GAMES AND PASTIMES. Sports are a big part of our pastimes so we are going to start our third set with the cast of Damn Yankees singing about “The Game”, the game being baseball. Then Sean Hayes will tell us that “She Likes Basketball” from the revival of Promises, Promises. We will follow that with “The Tennis Song” from Cy Coleman’s City Of Angels and conclude with “The Aggie Song” from Broadway cast album of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.  Here’s “The Game” from Damn Yankees.

  • And now for our final set of GAMES & PASTIMES. First, Julie Andrews and the children have fun with marionettes in “The Lonely Goatherd” from The Sound of Music. We will follow that with a song that composer Frank Loesser originally wrote for Guys and Dolls. After it was dropped from that score he found a place for it in The Most Happy Fella. The song is “Standing On The Corner” a pastime that many do. Then, a pastime that I use to do, we are going to hear “Up on the Roof” from the Jukebox Musical, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. And we are going to end with “Once-A-Year-Day”, a song about the company picnic from The Pajama Game. Here’s “The Lonely Goatherd” from The Sound of Music.
