Contemporary Classics February 21, 2023 Anthony McGill

Tonight on Contemporary Classics I have Anthony McGill.  Anthony is the principle clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic - the first and only black principal in the orchestra.  However Anthony has been very busy with recordings as a chamber player as well.  This past November saw the release on Cedille Records of the album American Stories featuring new works by Richard Danielpour, James Lee III, and Ben Shirley, and Valerie Coleman with 3 of the 4 works having their  world-premiere recordings.   In February, 2021 he performed Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Clarinet Quintet in F-sharp minor  on the Catalyst Quartet’s Uncovered Volume 1 album.  And  later this coming Sunday on February 26 Anthony will be joining the Catalyst Quartet in a performance of Coleridge-Taylor: Clarinet Quintet at Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall in Marrow GA just south of Atlanta.
