Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
On Jan 28, 1969, the largest oil spill up to that time occurred along the coast near Santa Barbara, California. On June 19, 1969, the Cuyahoga River that ran through Cleveland, Ohio caught fire. Due to these and other environmental catastrophes of the 1960s, on April 22, 1970, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson helped establish Earth Day to bring awareness to environmental issues and to transform public attitudes toward responsibility for stewardship of the environment. Earth Day provided the push that the nation and Congress needed and became the foundation for environmental laws like the Clean air act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. To honor Earth Day, which was Yesterday, our theme today is nature and the Earth.
Our first set is all about pollution and its harm to the environment. We are going to open with satirist and Harvard Math professor Tom Lehrer’s satirical take on the subject from the 1960s, “Pollution”. Then Keith Carradine as humorist Will Rogers singing “Look Around” from The Will Rogers Follies. Next, composer Jerry Herman wrote about pollution in the song “The Spring of Next Year” from his musical Dear World. And finally, the song “Shadowland” from The Lion King is not about pollution per se but about the devastation that can happen to the land when it is over exploited and not cared for. Here’s Tom Lehrer and his satirical “Pollution”.
You just heard Tom Lehrer’s “Pollution”, “Look Around” from The Will Rogers Follies, “The Spring Next Year” from Dear World, and “Shadowland” from The Lion King as we honor Earth Day, which was yesterday, on today’s edition of “well, That’s Show Biz!”

Our theme today is Earth Day, which was celebrated yesterday, April 22nd. For Set 2, we are going to look at songs that deal with where we live. First up, we are going to go back to Jerry Herman’s “Dear World” with the title song. Jerry Herman also wrote the beautiful and inspirational song “I Belong Here” for his musical The Grand Tour. We are going to follow that with two finales. First “Make Our Garden Grow” from the 1997 revival of Candide and then the finale “Home” from The Wiz. Here is the title song to “Dear World”.

To wrap up today’s Earth Day edition of “well, That’s Show Biz!”, we are going to start with two hopeful songs about rainbows. First, Kermit the Frog sings about “The Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie and then Judy Garland sings her signature song “Over The Rainbow” from The Wizard Of Oz. And finally, Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” is perhaps the definitive Earth Day Song. If you’ve never seen his video of “Earth Song”, you should, as it shows in devastating visuals the effects of humanity’s influence on the environment. But it leaves us with the knowledge that the devastation is reversible if we act soon and aggressively. Here’s Kermit with “The Rainbow Connection”.
