  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and this is the show that brings you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • Summer is the time most people go on vacation and travel. Last winter, using one listener’s suggestion, I did a show about musicals set in foreign lands. I had to split the theme into two shows. Although far from comprehensive, the first show covered Africa, the Middle East, the Far East, and Western and Northern Europe. This show will cover Australia and Polynesia, South and Central America, the Caribbean, Canada, and Eastern Europe. Once again, this list is not comprehensive and it was especially hard finding cast albums for shows set in these regions.

  • We are going to start off this Foreign Lands show with two shows set in Australia. The Boy From Oz told the life story of singer/songwriter Peter Allen using his own songs to tell his story. Although most of the story takes place in the US, he was born and raised in the little town of Tenterfield, Australia. Hugh Jackman won the Tony for his portrayal of Peter Allen. We will hear him singing Peter’s autobiographical song, “Tenterfield Saddler”. The second Australia show is another Juke Box Musical using pop songs based on the movie of the same title Priscilla - Queen of the Desert, about a trio of drag queens that cross the Australian outback to perform at a hotel. We are going to hear “It’s Raining Men”. Here’s Hugh Jackman with “Tenterfield Saddler” from The Boy From Oz.

  • You just heard “Tenterfield Saddler” from The Boy From Oz and “It’s Raining Men” from Priscilla - Queen of the Desert as we are looking at shows set in foreign lands.

  • We now leave Australia and travel to Polynesia as we hear “Where You Are” from Disney’s Moana. We will follow that with “Bali Ha’i” from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific. Here’s “Where You Are” from Moana.

  • You just heard “Where You are” from Moana and “Bali Ha’i” from South Pacific as we leave Oceania and travel to South America. First up, we go to Argentina to hear Patti Lupone sing “Buenos Aires” from Evita. Then to Brazil to hear wil.i.am, Jamie Fox, and Anne Hathaway sing “Hot Wings (I Wanna Party)” from the animated movie Rio. And finally to Columbia where “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Disney’s Encanto. Here’s “Buenos Aires” from Evita.

  • We are listening to songs from shows set in Foreign Lands as we head into the Caribbean with the song “We Dance” from Once On This Island. Then the musical Jamaica starred Lena Horne with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg, the same team behind the music for The Wizard Of Oz. It tells the story of a small island community fighting to avoid being overrun by American commercialism. We are going to hear Lena Horne sing “Napoleon”. Here’s “We Dance” from Once On This Island.

  • You just heard the songs “We Dance” from Once On This Island and “Napoleon” from Jamaica, two shows set in the Caribbean.

  • Next, we fly over to Mexico to hear “Un Poco Loco” from Disney and Pixar’s Coco.

  • Based on a listeners suggestion, we are listening to shows set in Foreign Lands. Before we leave the Western Hemisphere and head over to Eastern Europe, we are going to make a brief stop in Canada to hear “Me and the Sky” from the musical Come From Away about the morning of September 11th when planes headed for the US were all diverted to a small airport in Newfoundland. Here’s “Me and the Sky”.

  • You just heard “Me and the Sky” from Come From Away, a show set in Canada.

  • And now, to close out the show, we head over to Eastern Europe to hear “A Night in the Ukraine” from A Day In Hollywood / A Night In the Ukraine. This show is really two one-act musicals. Act 1 has ushers from Grauman’s Chinese Theater singing songs about Hollywood before introducing the evening’s new Marx Brother’s movie comedy which is based on a play by Anton Chekoff. “A Night in the Ukraine” closes the first Act. Then we are going to hear Josh Groban sing “Pierre” from Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 which is based on a 70 page segment of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. And finally, we will hear Zero Mostel and Company sing about “Anatevka” from Fiddler On the Roof. Here’s “A Night In the Ukraine”.
