Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Schools are starting again for the 2023-2024 school year and I recently came across a list of the most popular High School Musicals that were produced during the last school year. I thought it might be fun to look at the top 10. So let’s get started with number 10 and counting down.
Starting at number 10, we have a musical with a book by Tina Fey based on her comedy movie. We are going to hear the song “Someone Gets Hurt” from Mean Girls: The Musical. Next, at number 9, we have another musical based on a movie about a California girl getting into Harvard Law. From the show, Legally Blond: The Musical, we are going to hear “So Much Better”. Then at number 8, we have the teen edition of the longest running American musical on Broadway. From the musical Chicago, we are going to hear “My Own Best Friend”. And finally in this first set, we are going to hear from a musical that includes songs written by David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Sara Bareilles, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, John Legend and many other famous musicians. At number 7 on the list of Most Popular High School Musicals, we are going to hear “(Just a) Simple Sponge”, written by Panic! At the Disco, from SpongeBob SquarePants, the New Musical. Here’s Mean Girls.
We are looking at the Most Popular High School Musicals that were produced last year and you just heard “Someone Gets Hurt” from number 10, Mean Girls: The Musical, “So Much Better” from number 9, Legally Blonde: The Musical, “My Own Best Friend” from number 8, Chicago, and “(Just a) Simple Sponge” from number 7, SpongeBob SquarePants, the New Musical.

We are counting down the Most Popular High School Musicals produced during the last school year today and there is no number 6 as there is a tie for the number 5 spot on the list. Tied for number 5 are two Disney inspired musicals. First we are going to hear “Part of Your World” from Disney’s The Little Mermaid. And then we will hear “Belle” from Disney’s Beauty and The Beast. And we are going to close out this set with number 4 on the list, a show based on Roger Corman’s campy horror movie Little Shop of Horrors. We will hear “Suddenly Seymour”. Here’s The Little Mermaid.

Since its inception, the characters have been adapted to television, movies, video games, and comic books.
