Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Today’s show is all about Extremes and Superlatives - From Everything to Nothing, Best and Worst, Top and Bottom, Never and Always, Heaven and Hell.
We are going to open our first set with “All Er Nuthin’” from Oklahoma! As Will Parker states his limits to Ado Annie. Then Madeline Kahn in the role of actress Lily Garland in the musical On The 20th Century sings “Never” as she contemplates starring in her former lover Oscar Jaffes’ new musical. Next we will hear Diahann Caroll and Richard Kiley sing about “The Sweetest Sounds” from the musical No Strings. No Strings was the only score for which Richard Rodgers wrote both the lyrics and music and his first musical written after the death of his partner Oscar Hammerstein II. Diahann Caroll won the Tony Award for Best Actress which was a first for an African-American. And we are going to close out this first set with Sutton Foster as Reno Sweeney singing “You’re the Top” from Cole Porter’s Anything Goes. Here’s “All Er Nuthin’”.

Extremes & Superlatives is the theme this week and we are starting off our second set with “All for the Best” from Godspell. Then we are going to hear Harry Guardino sing “Sometimes a Day Goes By” from Woman Of The Year. Now the word “Sometimes” is not an Extreme or a Superlative but if you listen to the lyrics of the song, you will realize that “Sometimes” is really never. And we will conclude this set with Bernadette Peters as Mable Normand singing “Wherever He Ain’t” from Jerry Herman’s Mack & Mabel. Here’s “All for the Best” from Godspell.
