Happy New Year and Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and this is the weekly show that brings you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Last year’s New Year’s show was canceled due to the fact that I accidentally left everything I needed to do the show at home. I learned from that mistake and this year’s New Year’s show is basically what you would have heard last year. Today’s show has a party atmosphere so besides New Year’s songs it will include fun party-like songs as well.
We are going to open our New Year’s Eve Party with Angela Lansbury and the cast of Mame singing “It’s Today”. Then from the original Broadway cast of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn we are going to hear the title song “Holiday Inn / Happy Holiday”. We are going to follow that with Jennifer Holiday and the Broadway cast of Dreamgirls singing “One Night Only”. And we will conclude this set with “Raise the Roof” from the Off-Broadway Cast Recording of The Wild Party. Here is “It’s Today” from Mame to start off our New Year’s Eve Party.

It’s a New Year’s Eve Party today on “well, That’s Show Biz!” and we are going to open our second set with Leslie Odom, Jr. singing “Go Crazy”. Then, composer Frank Loesser wrote a classic New Year’s song, “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve”, recorded by numerous artists. This version is by Rufus Wainwright. And closing out our second New Year’s Party set is Bonnie Franklin and company singing the title song from Applause. Here’s Leslie Odom Jr. with “Go Crazy”.

And now to conclude our New Year’s Eve Party. A lot of people begin the new year with new jobs and new relationships. So, here’s a fun song from the musical They’re Playing Our Song. The main characters, played by Lucie Arnaz and Robert Klein, begin their music writing relationship with the song “Workin’ It Out”. Then Andrew Garfield and company, from the Netflix musical, tick, tick…Boom!, improvise the song “Boho Days” at a party. Next, we go back to Holiday Inn, this time from the 1942 movie, to hear Bing Crosby with “Let’s Start the New Year Off Right”. And finally, the song “Our Time” from Merrily We Roll Along, taken out of context for the new year, is an optimistic song about the future. Here’s “Workin’ It Out” from They’re Playing Our Song.
