December 5, 2023 Ideas for Inprovements to Savannah's Justice System

Attorney Michael Edwards joined hosts Louis Clausi and Barbara Humphrey to suggest improvements of issues of injustice in Savannah.  Michael explained that he strives for equity achieve equality.   He explained that by striving for equity, we recognize that some people need more supports than others to reach equality.

One month shy of reaching 30 years as a Savannah resident, Michael discussed his extensive community involvements, particularly support for local artists.   The lack of affordable housing is an injustice faced by many artists, and he urged that in addition to our patronage of local art and artists, we advocate for more affordable housing for all.   This led to a discussion of neighborhoods and the suggestion that there should be a mechanism for representatives of local neighborhood organizations to come together to discuss issues and ideas for improvements, This is a great example of grassroots democracy.

Michael talked about research he was involved in while living in England, He called it "participatory research," where instead of going into an area to ask questions created by the researchers, you asked the residents to tell the researchers what areas to address.

We all agreed that we need to continue this discussion on a future show.
