  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • This is my second annual show based on Empowerment in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day tomorrow. Empowerment is one of my favorite themes as many of the songs that I can select to play could be thought of as Empowerment Anthems.

  • We are going to open with Tammy Grimes declaring “I Ain’t Down Yet” from the original Broadway production of The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Next, Adrienne Warren demands you “Better Be Good to Me” from Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. Then, Gwen Verdon, as Charity Hope Valentine, tries to boost the courage of John Mc Martin with the song “I’m the Bravest Individual” from Sweet Charity. And finally, Brian Stokes Mitchell sings the Empowerment Anthem from Ragtime, “Make Them Hear You”. Here’s “I Ain’t Down Yet” from The Unsinkable Molly Brown.

  • You just heard the Empowerment songs ‘I Ain’t Down Yet” from The Unsinkable Molly Brown, “Better Be Good to Me” from Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, “I’m the Bravest Individual” from Sweet Charity, and “Make Them Hear You” from Ragtime as we honor Martin Luther King Jr. today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

  • Our theme today is Empowerment in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Many of today’s songs could be thought of as Empowerment Anthems. We are going off set two with Angela Lansbury and the cast of Mame singing “Open a New Window”. Then we will hear Joel Grey singing the reprise to “I’ll Be Here Tomorrow” from The Grand Tour. Next we will hear the soaring “This Is the Moment” from Jekyll & Hyde. And we will conclude with Jennifer Holiday singing the powerful “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from Dreamgirls. Here’s “Open a New Window” from Mame.

Then we will hear “I Can Do That” from A Chorus Line. Next, Carol Channing and the cast of Hello, Dolly! sing “Before the Parade Passes By”. And finally, the plot of Hairspray deals with desegregation in Baltimore. We are going to hear the finale, “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from the film version. Just try not to move to this one.
