“Well, That’s Show Biz!”

  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • I recently finished reading the nearly 1000 page autobiography, My Name Is Barbra by Barbra Streisand. In it she discusses just about everything, her beginnings, Broadway, Movies, Concerts, all the major albums, rumors, and her notorious stage fright. She goes into great detail, without ever being boring, on her creative processes as a singer, actor, director, writer, and producer. My favorite chapters were about the movie Prince Of Tides but there were many wonderful chapters and it is interesting how she helped break the misogyny of Hollywood. I highly recommend Barbra Streisand’s autobiography, My Name Is Barbra.

  • And it’s because of this book that today’s theme is Entertainers with a focus on Barbra Streisand.

  • After many years not singing in public, Barbra Streisand went on a concert tour opening with this song from Sunset Boulevard, “As If We Never Said Goodbye”, that beautifully expressed her inner feelings and relationship with her audience. On a later concert tour called Back to Brooklyn, she introduced her son Jason Gould to the audience and they sang this duet, “How Deep Is the Ocean” with him. He has an incredible voice which I think sounds like a cross between Josh Groban and George Michael. Here’s Barbra Streisand and then her son Jason Gould.

  • We are focused on entertainers today and you just heard Barbra Streisand singing “As If We Never Said Goodbye” from Sunset Boulevard and duetting with her son Jason Gould with “How Deep Is the Ocean”. We will come back to them later.

  • Our next Entertainer we are featuring today is Judy Garland. Here she is singing “As Long As He Needs Me” from Oliver! on her CBS television show.

  • You just heard Judy Garland singing “As Long As He Needs Me” originally from Oliver! as we focus on Entertainers today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

  • Our show today features Entertainers. In the 1960’s, Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews did two television concerts. We are going to hear one of the highlights of their first concert. Here are Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews with a “History of Musical Comedy”.

  • You just heard Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews with a “History of Musical Comedy” from their first television concert in the 1960s as we feature Entertainers today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

  • Today we are featuring Entertainers and the second half of the show will seem like a reverse mirror image of the first half.

  • In their second television concert, Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews tried to outdo their “History of Musical Comedy” with this “Medley of the 60’S”.

  • You just heard Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews perform their “Medley of the 60’S” from their second television concert.

  • We are going to go back to Judy Garland with my favorite performance of hers. “What Now My Love” from her concert with Liza at the London Palladium. Here’s Judy.

  • You just heard Judy Garland singing “What Now My Love”. I just love the wrenching emotion she brings to this song.

  • And now we are going to conclude with how we started the show. First we are going to hear Jason Gould, Barbra Streisand’s son, singing “This Masquerade”, and then we will hear Barbra Streisand sing “He Touched Me”. Here they are.

  • You just heard Jason Gould with “This Masquerade” and his mother Barbra Streisand with “He Touched Me” as we conclude today’s show focusing on Entertainers.
