  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • <Play Love Crazy>

  • That was singer-songwriter Peter Allen with “Love Crazy”. Those who know me well know that my two musical idols are Stephen Sondheim and Peter Allen. I’ve done many shows featuring SAtephen Sondheim and since yesterday was Peter Allen’s Birthday, I felt it was time for Peter Allen.

  • Peter Allen spent many years declaring at concerts that he was writing a musical about gangster Legs Diamond and would perform songs from said musical. Eventually he did. We are going to hear a few songs written for Legs Diamond but not necessarily in the context of that show.  First up, we will hear Peter Allen and Harry Connick Jr. singing “When I Get My Name In Lights” followed by “Sure Thing Baby” from the Broadway production of Legs Diamond. Here’s “When I Get My Name In Lights”.

  • You just heard “When I Get My Name In Lights” and “Sure Thing Baby” both from Peter Allen’s Broadway Musical Legs Diamond. By the way, the critics savaged Legs Diamond but it was more because of Peter Allen’s poor acting abilities as his understudy got better critical responses for the times he performed.

  • We are highlighting singer-songwriter Peter Allen today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”. Hugh Jackman won the Tony award for Best actor in the Jukebox musical about Peter Allen’s life, The Boy From Oz. One of the songs from Legs Diamond, “All I Wanted Was the Dream” was used here as a song for the character of Judy Garland to sing as she discovered Peter Allen and eventually became his mother-in-law when he married Liza Minnelli. Then we will hear Hugh Jackman sing “Quiet Please, There’s a Lady On Stage” a song that relates to Judy Garland. Here’s “All I Wanted Was the Dream” from The Boy From Oz.

  • You just heard “All  and I Wanted Was the Dream” and “Quiet Please, There’s a Lady On Stage” from the Peter Allen Jukebox Musical The Boy From Oz.

  • Peter Allen wrote songs for many artists. We are going to hear two of his most famous songs. First we will hear Olivia Newton-John performing “I Honestly Love You” followed by Melissa Manchester singing “Don’t Cry Out Loud”. Here’s Olivia.

  • You are listening to “well, That’s Show Biz!” on [Station ID].

  • We are listening to songs by singer-songwriter Peter Allen today. When Burt Bacharach and Carol Bayer-Sager were writing the score and songs to the movie Arthur. Carol Bayer-Sager remembered a line that Peter Allen thought up when he was in a plane circling La Guardia, “When you get caught between the moon and New York City”. They asked him to collaborate and history was made with the Academy Award winning song, “Arthur’s Theme”. Next we will hear Rita Coolidge singing “I’d Rather Leave While I’m In love”. Then, “We Wanted It All” was written for Frank Sinatra who renamed it “You And Me”. And finally we will hear Patti LaBelle’s cover of “I Don’t Go Shopping”. Here’s “Arthur’s Theme”.

  • You just heard “Arthur’s Theme”, “I’d Rather Leave While I’m In Love”, “You And Me (We Wanted It All)”, and “I Don’t Go Shopping” as we highlight songs by singer-songwriter Peter Allen.

  • It was Liza Minelli who convinced her husband Peter Allen that he should be a song-writer. The first song he wrote was “Simon” which Liza Minnelli performed on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1968. And we will conclude with Peter singing his autobiographical song “Tenterfield Saddler” with verses about his grandfather, his father, and himself.  Here is Liza Minnelli with “Simon” from the Ed Sullivan Show in 1969.

  • You just heard Liza Minnelli with “Simon” and Peter Allen with his autobiographical song “Tenterfield Saddler”. And that concludes our look at singer-songwriter Peter Allen. There are many other songs we could have chosen but we only had an hour.
