Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Last Wednesday was Valentine’s Day so today’s show consists of nothing but LOVE SONGS, all kinds of love songs. We are going to start off with a song that was added to the film version of Mame so that Robert Preston would get an additional song to sing. That song is the beautiful “Loving You”. Next, the song “If I Were a Bell” sung by the drunken character, Sarah Brown, from Guys and Dolls. Then we will hear the gay love song “The Best Thing That Has Ever Happened” from Stephen Sondheim’s Road Show. And we will close out this set with the glorious “My Heart Is So Full Of You” from Frank Loesser’s The Most Happy Fella. Here’s “Loving You” from Mame.

Then, we will hear the beautiful “What More Can I Say?” from Falsettos. And we will close this set with my cousin, Ethan Freeman, singing “Almost Like Being In Love” from Brigadoon. Now to complete today’s show on LOVE SONGS, the producer’s of Funny Girl wanted to use Fanny Brice’s signature song “My Man” as their 11 o’clock number but they were obligated to use only Jule Styne’s songs. We are going to hear his beautiful song, “The Music That Makes Me Dance”. When they made the film version, they were free of the obligation and substituted in “My Man”. Here’s Barbra Streisand singing the 11 o’clock ballads “The Music That Makes Me Dance” and “My Man” from Funny Girl.
You just heard “The Music That Makes Me Dance” and “My Man” from the play and film versions of Funny Girl. And that concludes our show on LOVE SONGS.
