  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • <Play “The Continental”

  • That was Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire singing and dancing to “The Continental” from the 1934 movie musical The Gay Divorcee, the very first winner of the Oscar for Best Song. The Oscars are tonight and I’ve been trying to figure out how to do a show that would cover 90 years of Oscar songs. And then I figured it out. The first Oscar for Best Song was in 1934 and this is 2024. We are going to cover the Best Song Oscars in 10 year intervals and conclude the show with the 5 nominated songs for 2024. We will hear how music, especially movie music has changed over the decades.

  • Our next set will begin with 1944s “Swinging On a Star” sung by Bing Crosby from Going My Way. Next the title song to 1954s Three Coins In the Fountain first recorded by Frank Sinatra. And we will conclude this set with Dick Van Dyke and the cast of Mary Poppins singing 1964s “Chim Chim Cher-ee”. Here’s 1944s Best Song Oscar winner, “Swinging On a Star”.

  • The Oscars are tonight and you just heard the Best Song Oscar winners, 1944s “Swinging On a Star”, 1954s “Three Coins In the Fountain” and 1964s “Chim Chim Cher-ee”.

Then the cast of The Lion King brings us 1994s Best Song winner, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. And we will conclude with the 2004s winner “Al Otro Lado Del Rio” from The Motorcycle Diaries. This was the first Spanish language song and the second foreign language song to receive the Oscar. Here’s “We May Never Love Like This Again” from The Towering Inferno.
