Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Back in February, I asked listeners to send me your lists of favorite musicals so I could tailor a show just for you. This is the first of those shows which I call Fan Favorites. This list of favorite musicals is from a fan who listens on-line at WRUU.org.
The first show on her list was a show that beat out West Side Story for the Best Musical Tony Award in 1958, The Music Man. We are going to hear two songs from the film version. First, Robert Preston singing “Ya Got Trouble” and then Shirley Jones singing “Till There Was You”. Here’s Fan Favorite The Music Man.

The second musical on her favorites list is the Lerner and Loewe musical based on George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion. The musical My Fair Lady made Julie Andrews a star and became the longest running Broadway musical at the time with 2,717 performances. We are going to hear Julie Andrews sing two songs. Back in February, I asked my listeners to send in their lists of favorite musicals so I could tailor a show around them. This is the first Fan Favorites show. The next show on this list started out as a simple Off-Broadway musical in 1960 but its initial production ran for 42 years making it the world’s longest running musical with 17,162 performances. We are going to hear 3 songs from The Fantasticks. First, from the original production, Jerry Orbach sings “Try to Remember”. Then from the 2006 Off-Broadway production, we will hear the songs “Metaphor” and “Never Say No”. Here’s The Fantasticks.
