  • You are listening to [station ID].

  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and this is the show that brings you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • I asked fans of the show to send me their lists of favorite musicals so that I could create a show around their lists. I am calling these shows Fan Favorites and this is the second of those shows.

  • Today’s list is from a fan here in Savannah. Her list had ten shows on it and I assume that they are in order starting with the most favorite.

  • Her first show on her list began as a little off-Broadway musical from 1960 based on a play about two neighboring fathers who trick their children into falling in love by pretending to feud.  The show ran for 42 years. From this little musical, The Fantasticks, here’s “I Can See It”.

  • You just heard “I Can See It” from the fan favorite musical, The Fantasticks.

  • The next musical on her list is about a fictional character who first appeared as the villain in the penny dreadful 1846 serial The String of Pearls. In the story, a barber murders his customers with a straight razor and gives their corpses to his female partner in crime to bake their bodies into meat pies. From the original Broadway production of Srephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, we are going to hear “Pretty Women”. Then we will hear “Not While I’m Around” from the 2012 London Cast Recording which starred Imelda Staunton as Mrs. Lovett. Americans know her best as Dolores Umbridge from the Harry Potter films and from this recording I would say she made an incredible Mrs. Lovett. Here’s Fan Favorite, Sweeney Todd.

  • You just heard “Pretty Women” and “Not While I’m Around” from Fan Favorite musical, Sweeney Todd.

  • We are listening to songs from a list of a fan’s favorite musicals today. Next on her list is a musical revue with an original story based on the songs of Jacques Brel which ran off-Broadway for four years beginning in 1968. From Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, here’s the song “Madeleine”.

  • You just heard “Madeleine” from the Fan Favorite musical Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.

  • Next up is another Sondheim musical based on a painting which is hanging in the Art Institute of Chicago. From Sunday in the Park with George, we will hear Bernadette Peters singing “Everybody Loves Louis” and then she and Mandy Patinkin sing “Move On”. Here’s Fan Favorite, Sunday in the Park with George.

  • You just heard “Everybody Loves Louis” and “Move On” from the Fan Favorite musical, Sunday in the Park with George.

  • Before we hit our next break, the fifth show on this fan’s favorite musicals list is the epic musical based on Victor Hugo’s novel Les Miserables. We are going to hear  the polyphonic “One Day More”. Here’s Fan Favorite, Les Miserables.

  • You just heard “One Day More” from Les Miserables as we listen to songs from musicals from a list of favorites sent in by a fan today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”

  • You just heard “Loving You” from the Fan Favorite musical Passion.

  • Next up on her list of favorite musicals is a 2008 rock musical about a mother struggling with bipolar disorder  and how her struggle affects her family. From the musical Next to Normal, here’s “I’m Alive”.

  • You just heard “I’m Alive” from the Fan Favorite Musical, Next to Normal.

  • We next have the musical that Rodgers and Hammerstein considered their favorite. I think it is their most beautiful show as well. From Carousel, we will hear “The Highest Judge of All” followed by the “Finale: You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
