“Well, That’s Show Biz!”

06-09-2024

  • You are listening to [Station ID].

  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • June is Pride month, a month for celebrating one’s authentic self.

  • <Play “I Am What I Am”>

  • You just heard “I Am What I Am”, the unofficial Pride Month anthem from the Broadway musical La Cage Aux Folles which opens our third annual celebration of Pride. Today’s show will highlight the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.

  • Opening our first set is John Tartaglia and Rick Lyon singing “If You Were Gay” from Avenue Q. Then we will hear “Ring of Keys” from Fun House, a show called “the first mainstream musical about a young lesbian”. And we will close this set with Andrew Rannells and the cast of the Netflix film adaptation of The Prom singing “Love Thy Neighbor”, a show about a group of Broadway stars who travel to Indiana to help a high school girl go to her prom with her girlfriend.  Here’s “If You were Gay” from Avenue Q.

  • We are celebrating Pride Month with songs highlighting the LGBTQ+ Community and its allies. Taken out of context, this Peter Allen song, “Sure Thing Baby”, from his musical Legs Diamond could come across as another Pride Anthem. Then, Stephen Sondheim did not start out to write a gay love song, but after several iterations of his show Road Show, the song “The Best Thing That Has Ever Happened” became that. We will follow that with Luke Evans singing “Stranger in This World” from Taboo, a show with lyrics by Boy George and loosely based on his life. And we will close the set with the Broadway cast of Rent singing “Seasons of Love”. Here’s “Sure Thing Baby” from Legs Diamond.

  • You just heard “Sure Thing Baby” from Legs Diamond, “The Best Thing That Has Ever Happened” from Road Show, “Stranger in This World” from Taboo, and “Seasons of Love” from Rent as we celebrate Pride Month today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”.

  • June is Pride Month and we are celebrating today with songs relating to the LBGTQ+ community.

  • Our third set is dedicated to LGBTQ icons. First up, we will hear Peter Allen with his double entendre song “Bi-Coastal”. Elton John’s song “Elton’s Song” first appeared on his 1981 album, The Fox and is a genderless song about unrequited love. But the heart wrenching music video shows us a young schoolboy who has a crush on an older schoolboy. Elton John described it as “the first gay song that (he) actually recorded as a homosexual song”. And we will end the set with gay icon, Dusty Springfield, singing a Live version of her song “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”. Here’s “Bi-Coastal”.

  • It’s Pride Month and you just heard LGBTQ icons Peter Allen with “Bi-Coastal”, Elton John with “Elton’s Song”, and Dusty Springfield with “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”.

  • We are celebrating Pride Month today and next up we have two beautiful songs. The show Falsettos involves the themes of Jewish identity, gender roles, and gay life in the late 1970s and early 1980s. We are going to hear Christian Borle with the song “What More Can I Say?”. Then in the musical The Prom, an Indiana high school girl just wants to be able to take her girlfriend to their highschool prom in defiance of the community. We will hear the song “Dance With You”. Here’s “What More Can I Say?” from Falsettos.

  • You just heard the beautiful songs “What More Can I Say?” from Falsettos and “Dance With You” from The Prom.

  • We have one last Pride anthem. Cindi Lauper wrote the music to the Broadway show Kinky Boots. After the drag queens in the play save the day, the entire company comes together to sing the finale and Pride anthem “Raise You Up / Just Be”. Here’s the rousing Finale of Kinky Boots.

  • You just heard the Finale to Kinky Boots, “Raise You Up / Just Be”, and that concludes our Pride Month celebration on “well, That’s Show Biz!”
