Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Tonight is the Tony Awards. Last year I was able to present a song from every musical that opened during the 2023 Tony Award season. This year, there were too many musicals that opened to do that in one show. So instead, I will be presenting songs that are from shows that have been nominated for Best Original Score, Best Musical Revival, and Best New Musical.
Not every Best Original Score nomination has come from a show nominated for Best New Musical, in fact there are three and we are going to start with those.
The first Best Original Score nomination is based on a 1962 movie about a young couple who marry but their social drinking descends into alcoholism. From the musical Days of Wine and Roses, here are two songs, first the song “Evanesce” and then “Forgiveness”.
You just heard the songs “Evanesce” and “Forgiveness” from the new Broadway musical Days of Wine and Roses which is nominated for Best Original Score Tony Award.
The next Best Original Score nominated show is Here Lies Love, music and lyrics by David Byrne, of The Talking Heads, and Fatboy Slim. Here Lies Love is based on their concept album about Imelda Marcos, former first lady of The Philippines. Here is the song “Child of the Philippines”.
You just heard “Child of the Philippines” from the 2024 Best Original Score Tony nominee Here Lies Love.
Now, to finish this first set of Original Score Nominees, we have an unusual nominee. Stereophonic is not considered a musical and is nominated for Best New Play. However, is has a Best Original Score nomination as the play is about a fictional rock band struggling to record their new album. From the play Stereophonic, here’s the song “Masquerade”.
You just heard “Masquerade” from the 2024 Best Original Score nominee Stereophonic.

The 2024 Tony Awards are tonight and we are listening to songs from the nominees for Best Original Score, Best Musical Revival, and Best New Musical.
For Set 1 we heard songs from the three musicals that were nominated for Best Original Score but not Best New Musical. In this second set, we are going to hear songs from three of the four musicals nominated for Best Revival.
We are going to open with “If You Could See Her” from Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. This revival is basically the 2021 London Cast of Cabaret that moved to Broadway with the alteration of the name. Eddie Redmayne made the transition to Broadway, and although I found no cast album, here he is from the 2021 London version singing “If You Could See Her”.
You just heard Eddie Redmayne singing “If You Could See Her” from Cabaret.
Our next Best Musical Revival nominee is Gutenberg! The Musical!. I’m not sure why it is considered a Broadway revival as it was an off-Broadway show and London musical in 2006 with this being the first time on Broadway. It is about two clueless composers who create an inaccurate musical about the life of Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press. Here are Andre Rannells and Josh Gad with “Tomorrow Is Tonight” from Gutenberg! The Musical!.
You just heard “Tomorrow Is Tonight” from the 2024 Best Musical Revival Nominee Gutenberg! The Musical!
Our third Best Musical Revival Nominee is The Who’s Tommy based on the 1969 rock opera, Tommy. Here’s “Pinball Wizard” from The Who’s Tommy.
You just heard “Pinball Wizard” from The Who’s Tommy. There is one more Best Musical Revival nominee but we will hear from that show later. After the break we will hear songs from the 5 shows nominated for the 2024 Best new Musical Tony Awards.

Tonight is the 2024 Tony Awards and in this set we will hear songs from 3 of the shows nominated for Best New Musical. None of these three were also nominated for Best Original Score.
First up is the song “Kaleidoscope” from the musical Hell’s Kitchen that uses the songs of Alicia Keys to tell her semi-autobiographical story of her upbringing in 1990s Manhattan. Here’s “Kaleidoscope” from Hell’s Kitchen.
You just heard “Kaleidoscope” from the 2024 Best New Musical Tony nominee Hell’s Kitchen.
The next New Musical nominee Is Illinoise, a dance revue musical with an original story inspired by Sufjan Stevens 2005 album of the same name. I do not believe there is a cast album yet but this song, “Decatur, Or, Round of Applause for Your Stepmother!” is from the original 2005 album.
You just heard “Decatur, Or, Round of Applause for You Stepmother!” from the 2005 concept album that the New Musical nominee Illinoise is based on.
The final Best New Musical nominee in this set, which also did not have its original score nominated, is Water For Elephants based on the 2006 novel of the same name. We are going to hear two songs. First Grant Gustin, best known for playing Barry Allen on The CW series The Flash making his Broadway debut here, sings “Silver Stars”. Then we will hear the song “Wild”. Here’s “Silver Stars” from Water For Elephants.
You just heard the songs “Silver Stars” and “Wild” from the 2024 Best New Musical Tony nominee Water For Elephants.

We are listening to songs from the 2024 Tony nominated Best new Musicals and these final two nominations were nominated for both Best Original Score AND Best New Musical.
First up is the song “Keep Marching” from the musical Suffs based on the American women’s suffrage movement leading up to the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Here’s “Keep Marching”.
You just heard “Keep Marching” from the Tony nominated Best New Musical Suffs.
Our final Best New Musical nominee is The Outsiders based on S. E. Hinton’s 1967 novel and 1983 film adaptation of the same name. We are going to hear two songs, first “Soda’s Letter” and then “Stay Gold”. Here’s The Outsiders.
You just heard “Soda’s Letter” and “Stay Gold” from The Outsiders, the last of the 2024 Best New Musical Tony Award nominated shows.
Before we end the show, there is one more musical to share with you, the fourth show nominated for Best Musical Revival. I close with this show because as a fan of Stephen Sondheim, I feel that his musical Merrily We Roll Along will hopefully get the recognition that it is due. From the 2023 revival of Merrily We Roll Along, here’s “Not A Day Goes By”.
You just heard “Not A Day Goes By” from Merrily We Roll Along, the final musical revival up for tonight’s 2024 Tony Awards.
