Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Last Thursday was July 4th and every year, to celebrate American Independence Day, our theme has been Americana, songs from musicals that speak to American culture.
One aspect of American culture is the State Fair. And we are going to open with the opening song, “Our State Fair” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s State Fair. It was originally a movie but this is from the 1996 Original Broadway Cast recording that starred John Davidson, Kathryn Crosby, and Andrea McArdle. Next, another purely American summer activity is the New England Clambake. We are going to hear “This Was a Real Nice Clambake” from Rodgers & Hammersteins’s Carousel. Then, there was nothing more American than the satirical comic strip Li'l Abner. We are going to hear Stubby Kaye with “Jubilation T. Cornpone” from the film version of Li’l Abner, lyrics by Savannah’s own Johnny Mercer. And we will conclude this set with “But, Mr. Adams” from 1776 about the writing of the Declaration of Independence. Here’s “Our State Fair” from State Fair.
This is our third annual Americana show for July 4th, which was Thursday and you just heard “Our State Fair” from State Fair, “This Was a Real Nice Clambake” from Carousel, “Jubilation T. Cornpone” from Li’l Abner, and “But, Mr. Adams” from 1776.

Our theme today is Americana as last Thursday was The 4th of July. We are going to start off our second set with “Wells Fargo Wagon” from the original production of The Music Man. Next, we will hear “Fugue for Tinhorns” from the 1992 revival of Guys and Dolls. Then we will hear “Big D” from The Most Happy Fella. And we will conclude this set with “The Egg” from 1776, as John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson discuss what the national symbol should be for the newly born United States. Here’s the “Wells Fargo Wagon” from The Music Man.
