“Well, That’s Show Biz!”

  • You are listening to [Station ID].

  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • Today, July 14th, is Pandemonium Day.

  • <Play “Pandemonium”>

  • You just heard the song “Pandemonium” from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Today’s theme is Pandemonium fro Pandemonium Day. Pandemonium is wild and noisy, disorder, confusion, or chaos and the songs today evoke Pandemonium in their lyrics or in their style.

  • We are going to open with “30/90” from tick, tick…BOOM! Which is the semi-autobiographical musical about composer Jonathan Larson. This, the opening song, delves into the panic the composer feels as he is turning 30 years old and feels that he hasn’t accomplished anything. I prefer the movie version of this song but I can’t play it on the radio as Andrew Garfield replaces an innocuous word with a throw away “F” bomb. Next we will hear “The World Has Gone Insane” from Jekyll & Hyde: The Gothic Musical Thriller, And we will conclude the set with “She’s a Nut” from On The Twentieth Century as the cast learns that the rich woman who has promised to produce their play is crazy. Here’s “30/90” from tick, tick…BOOM!.

  • <PSA>

  • Today is Pandemonium Day and we are listening to songs that evoke a sense of chaos and disorder.

  • Opening our second set is the number “13” from the film version of 13: The Musical. The song and musical deals with a young Jewish teen uprooted from New York City to Indiana when his parents divorce just before his Bar Mitzvah. Next we will hear “Non-Stop” from Hamilton, a song that ends the first act and tells about Hamilton’s busy and self-centered life after the Revolution. And we will conclude with “Another Hundred People” from Company. Here’s “13”.
