July 30, 2024 Being Poor in the USA

USA is no country for poor people.  We have no voice with elected officials unless we can make big donations to their campaigns.  We are often not able to afford a roof over our heads, food on our tables, educational opportunities beyond high school graduation, healthcare, reliable transportation and so much more.   Yet our pathways out of poverty are blocked by the lack of living wage jobs with benefits, our age, our disability status, or our family obligations.  Where can we go to voice our grievances?  Where can our voices be heard.

Here is Savannah, despite the lack of affordable housing, food, healthcare and living wage jobs, we are fortunate to have non-commercial radio like WRUU where we can have these discussions to raise awareness of what it means to be poor and reason our way to a more humane society were we all can join in the pursuit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Next week, on the 79th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, we will look at this event in the historical context of the founding of the USA and its march from sea to shining sea and beyond by land theft, war, and genocide of indigenous, to the dropping of the atomic and plutonium bombs on 8/6 and 8/9 on the civilian populations of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to become the world's hegemon.
