September 24, 2024: Read a Banned Book Today
Banned Book Week is September 22-28, 2024, and but for Hurricane Helene, Savannah would have celebrated that event on Saturday, 9/28 on the southside of Forsyth Park. Although writing is a form of speech and falls under the protections of the Constitution's 1st Amendment. However, since the mid-19th century when Uncle Tom's Cabin was banned, books such as Tom Sawyer, more and more books are banned due to objections with content. Captain Underpants, and 1984 have been banned by various groups. In protest of such bans, we on Voices of Reason celebrate banned books and urge you to read a banned book today, start a banned book club, support your local libraries and book stores, and support your 1st Amendment right of free speech.
