Contemporary Classics March 13, 2018 Twelve Tone and Interview with Raphael Crystal

This episode of Contemporary Classics featured an interview with composer Raphael Crystal which can be heard by clicking on the player below.  This features a discussion and performance of his work "Fits and Starts".

In addition we featured other 12 tone works.

Ernst Krenek: Suite for Cello.   Ernst Krenek - was a prolific but little heard 20th century Austrian, later American, composer of Czech origin.  Adopted 12-tone approach in the early 1920s and also experimented with electronic music.  Suite for cello solo, Op. 84 composed in 1939 is in 5 movements.  Arnold Schoenberg Suite for Piano Op 25.   Of course it was Schoenberg who developed the 12-tone system.   The Suite for Piano was composed in 1925 and is in 4 movements.  Milton Babbitt: All Set.  All Set is a 1957 composition for jazz ensemble.  It combines a twelve-tone pitch structure with an combinatorial set pitch array so substitutes references to the array, rather than to a single, referential twelve-tone row.  We also included two arias from Alban Berg's Wozzeck, both from Act II.   "Wohin so eilig, gehertester, Herr Sargnagel?" and  " Ich hab' ein Hemdlein an.  These were from a new live recording of Wozzeck that received a couple of Grammys this year.   We ended with  T.T.T. (Twelve Tone Tune) by Bill Evans from his album The Bill Evans Album which is a jazz piece written in a 12-tone style.  And after all the second movement of Fits and Starts was structured around a straight ahead jazz style.
