Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Today, December 8th is World Choral Day so we are going to celebrate by playing big ensemble numbers from Broadway. Every big show has big chorus or ensemble songs so we can’t play all of your favorites. But I hope you enjoy the ones that I have chosen and don’t hesitate to sing along.
Webber and Rice’s Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat had a children’s chorus. We are going to open the first set with Donny Osmond and Ensemble singing “Any Dream Will Do”. Next, the ensemble from the original 1966 cast of Sweet Charity performs “Big Spender”. Then we will hear the original cast of Oliver! singing “Who Will Buy?”. And we will close the set with the reprise of “We Go Together” from the 2007 Broadway revival of Grease. Here’s “Any Dream Will Do” from Joseph.

I hated the musical 42nd Street, probably because I am not the biggest fan of dance shows. But I loved the big “Lullaby of Broadway” number. After that, the ensemble of Mame will regale us with their title song. And we will close the second set with the Finale of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. Here’s the great “Lullaby of Broadway” number from 42nd Street.
You just heard “Lullaby of Broadway” from 42nd Street, the title song from Mame, and the finale of Carousel as we listen to big choral/ensemble songs in celebration of World Choral Day today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”

We are going to open our third set with John Rubenstein and the ensemble from Pippin singing “Morning Glow”. Then. Bonnie Franklin and the ensemble from Applause deliver the title song. And we will conclude this set with Jeremy Jordan and the newsboys singing “Carrying the Banner” from Newsies. Here’s “Morning Glow” from Pippin.

We are going to conclude today’s show with two of the best closing chorus/ensemble songs from Broadway. First, we are going to hear the cast of the film version of Hairspray declaring “You Can’t Stop The Beat”. And we will close it out with perhaps the best choral finale ever, “Make Our Garden Grow” from Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. You may want to crank up the volume for these. Enjoy.
