December 10, 2024: USA and the Universal Doctrine of Human Rights
Today, December 10, is the 74th commemoration of International Human Rights Day, established after the UN adoption of the Universal Doctrine of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. The Doctrine contains 30 articles, beginning with "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." Despite Eleanor Roosevelt having helped write the UDHR, the USA, historically wary of officially adopting agreements and treaties via Congress because they become part of Article VI of The Constitution, only adopted 3 of 9 core sections.
Nevertheless, Two and Barbara used this day to bring an indictment of the USA for violations of the UDHR to Volker Turk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The indictment includes 26 violations for crossing sovereign country borders for the purpose of waging war and military interventions; violating laws of asylum; denying rights to prisoners; not guaranteeing life, liberty and securing of person and the right to a standard of living for health and well- being; rights related to employment including the right to form and join trade unions; that the will is of the people is no longer the basis of government authority; maintaining black sites to torture prisoners of military conflicts; and most importantly, violating Article 1 stating that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.
