Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Today’s show was pre-recorded as I am getting ready for a medical procedure.
Today is my 3rd Anniversary Show and the start of my 4th year as host of “well, That’s Show Biz!” on WRUU here in Savannah.
Last week, I ended my 3rd year, appropriately, with Finales, the final songs from 13 Broadway Musicals. Today, I celebrate once again with Opening Numbers but this time I will be mirroring the same shows from last week’s Finales episode.
The musical A Day In Hollywood / A Night In the Ukraine, is really two one act shows. The first act is a musical review with some songs contributed by composer Jerry Herman, that showcases the Golden Age of Hollywood. It is performed by actors playing ushers at Grouman’s Chinese Theater. They welcome you into the theater to watch a “new” Marx Brothers’ movie which comprises the second act. We are going to hear the opening number, “Just Go To The Movies”. We will follow that with the opening number from Les Miserables, Then, we will hear Robert Klein sing “Fallin’” the opening number from They’re Playing Our Song. And we will conclude this first set with “Hurry! It’s Lovely Up Here”, the opening number from the original production of On A Clear Day You Can See Forever. Here’s “Just Go To The Movies” from A Day In Hollywood / A Night In the Ukraine.
We are listening to Opening Numbers today and you just heard “Just Go To The Movies” from A Day In Hollywood / A Night In the Ukraine, the “Overture / Work Song” from Les Miserables, “Fallin’” from They’re Playing Our Song, and “Hurry! It’s Lovely Up Here”, from On A Clear Day You Can See Forever.

Starting off our second set of Opening Numbers, we have Dean Jones and the ensembles from Company with the title song. Then, Hugh Jackman opens The Boy From Oz, the jukebox musical about the life of Peter Allen, with the song “The Lives of Me”. And we will end the set with “Let Me Entertain You” from Gypsy. Here’s the opening title song from Company.

Starting off our third set, is Lauren Bacall with the title song from Woman Of The Year, the musical based on the Tracy/Hepburn movie of the same name. Then Raul Esparza and company bring us “30/90” from tick, tick…Boom!. We will follow thar with Rex Harrison asking “Why Can’t the English?” from My Fair Lady.
