Welcome to “”well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Tonight is the 97th Academy Awards, the Oscars, and today, we are going to showcase the Best Original Song winners starting with 1935 and going decade by decade until we get to this year’s nominated songs. You will see how music has changed over the decades.
We will start off the first set with 1935s Oscar winning song “Lullaby of Broadway” from Gold Diggers of 1935. Then we will hear “It Might As Well Be Spring” from 1945s Rodgers & Hammerstein film musical State Fair. After that, we will hear The Four Aces sing the title song from the 1955 film Love is a Many Splendored Thing. And we will conclude this first set with Tony Bennett singing “The Shadow of Your Smile”, the love theme from 1965s The Sand Piper. Here is “Lullaby of Broadway” from Gold Diggers of 1935.

For the Academy Awards later tonight we are listening to Best Original Song winners from every decade and starting off our second set we have Keith Carradine singing “I’m Easy” from 1975s Nashville. After that we will hear Lionel Richie singing “Say You, Say Me” from 1985s White Nights. We will follow that with Judy Kuhn singing “Colors of the Wind” from 1995s Pocahontas. Now 2005s entrant is very problematic for our show as the winner was “It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp” from Hustle & Flow. This is a rap song that contains words that the FCC will not allow me to play and I could not find a cleaned up version. So we will bypass that and go right to Sam Smith with “Writing’s on the Wall” from 2015s James Bond entrant, Spectre. Here’s 1975s “I’m Easy” from the movie Nashville.
We are listening to Best Original Song Oscar winners today and you just heard “I’m Easy” from 1975s Nashville, “Say You, Say Me” from 1985s White Nights, “Colors of the Wind” from 1995s Pocahontas, we had to bypass 2005s “It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp” from Hustle & Flow due to its choice of words, and we closed out the set with c from the 2015 James Bond movie, Spectre.
