Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Today’s show was pre-recorded.
April is Jazz Appreciation Month.
<Play “All That Jazz”>
April is Jazz Appreciation Month and you just heard “All That Jazz” from the musical Chicago.
Jazz music has always been a big influence on Broadway musicals since the beginning of the 20th century and often defined the music of Broadway. Many of our Jazz standards came from Broadway musicals. For Jazz Appreciation Month, we are going to highlight just a few of the songs and musicals that based their music on Jazz.
Starting off our first set, we have Nick Cordero singing “One of the Great Ones” from A Bronx Tale. It should be noted that Nick Cordero passed away at the age of 41 from COVID-19. The musical Hadestown was influenced by New Orleans style Jazz and it can be heard in the use of instruments in many of the orchestrations of the songs. We are going to hear the song “Wait for Me”. And we will end the set with “Jet Set” from the musical Catch Me If You Can. Here’s “One of the Great Ones” from A Bronx Tale.

Before he was a composer, Cy Coleman was a Jazz Pianist who used Jazz to influence his musical scores like Sweet Charity. We are going to hear “You’re Nothing Without Me” from his musical City of Angels. Then we are going to hear “Nothing Is Too Wonderful to Be True” from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. We will then close the set with “I Can Cook Too” from Leonard Bernstein’s Jazz influenced musical On The Town. Here’s “You’re Nothing Without Me” from City of Angels.
