  • Tonight is the 78th Tony Awards recognizing the best Broadway productions of the 2024 -2025 season. Today, we will present the nominees for Best Original Score, Best Musical, and Best Revival of a Musical. They will be presented in alphabetical order with a song selected from each nominee.


  • We are going to start with the nominees for Best Original Score.


  • First up is the musical Dead Outlaw, music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna and a book by Itamar Moses. Dead Outlaw tells the story of Elmer McCurdy whose life leads him into a life of crime. He is shot dead at the age of 31 but nobody claims his body. His corpse ends up traveling the country winding up in wax museums, movies, and an amusement park ride. His body was eventually discovered 66 years after his death. From the musical Dead Outlaw,m here is the song “Dead”.


  • You just heard the song “Dead” from the Best Original Score nominee, Dead Outlaw.


  • The next Best Original Score nominee is Death Becomes Her, based on the 1992 film of the same name, with music and lyrics by Julia Mattison and Noel Carey and a book by Marco Pennette. The story follows two women whose vanity and competition consumes them as they seek immortality. From the Best Original Score nominee, Death Becomes Her, here is the song “If You Want Perfection”.

  • Our next nominee for Best Original Score is Maybe Happy Ending, which originated in South Korea. The lyrics are by Hue Park with music composed by Will Aronson. The book was written by Park and Aronson and tells the story of two helper robots, Oliver, an obsolete helper-bot, and Claire, a newer model, who discover each other. Here is the song “The Way That It Has to Be” from the Best Original Score nominee Maybe Happy Ending.

  • Our 4th Best Original Score nominee is a musical comedy transfer from London, Operation Mincemeat, with book, music, and lyrics by David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson, and Zoe Roberts. Operation Mincemeat tells the true story of a World War II deception operation of the same name. The Allies wanted to invade Sicily but there were over 100,000 German soldiers on the island. They had to figure out a way to make the Germans think that the Allies were going to invade Sardinia instead so that the Germans w0uld move their soldiers off of Sicily. The deception was outrageous but it worked. From the Best Original Score nominee, Operation Mincemeat, here is the song “All the Ladies”.

  • Our final nominee for Best Original Score is Real Women have Curves with music and lyrics by Joy Huerta and Benjamin Velez and a book by Lisa Loomer and Nell Benjamin. It is based on Josefina Lopez’s play and 2002 film of the same name. It explores themes of ambition, family expectations, and the Latina immigrant experience. Here is the song “Flying Away” from the Best Original Score nominee Real Women have Curves.

  • Tonight is the 78th Tony Awards and in the first set we heard songs from the 5 musicals nominated for Best Original Score. We will now hear from the 5 musicals nominated for Best Musical. Again, these will be in alphabetical order.


  • The first Best Musical nominee is Buena Vista Social Club is inspired by the 1997 Grammy-winning album of the same name and tells the story of the musicians who made the album. There is no cast album at the moment so we will here a selection from the original album that the musical is based on. Heren is the song “Chan Chan” from Buena Vista Social Club.


  • You just heard the song “Chan Chan” from the album Buena Vista Social Club which inspired the Beat Musical nominee of the same name.


  • The rest of the Best Musical nominees were also nominated for Best Original Score. We are going to hear the song “Normal” from Dead Outlaw and the song “For The Gaze”, G-A-Z-E, from Death Becomes Her. Please note the obvious double entendre in the title. Here’s “Normal” from Dead Outlaw.

There is no cast album yet so we are going to hear Adam Guettel from the original 1997 production. After that we will hear Audra McDonald sing “Some People” from Gypsy. By the way, Audra is up for her record-setting 8th Tony for Best Actress in a musical. Then we will hear “With Cat-Like Tread, Upon Our Prey We Steal” from the 1983 production of The Pirates of Penzance. The revival is called Pirates! The Penzance Musical where the setting has been changed to New Orleans. There is no cast recording yet. And we will close with “With One Look” from the London recording of SUNSET BLVD.
