Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Today’s show was pre-recorded.
June is Pride Month. It’s origins go back to June 28, 1969 when the New York City police went on one of their routine raids of the Stonewall Inn which was popular among the LGBTQ community. But this time, the community had enough and fought back, led mainly by drag queens and other marginalized groups within the gay community. This led to several nights of rioting and gay liberation protests. The community just wanted to live their authentic lives with dignity.

You just heard “I Am What I Am” from La Cage Aux Folles which has become a Pride anthem for the LGBTQ community. Pride Month is our theme today.
We are going to start off our first set with “Getting Married Today” from the 2018 London cast recording of Stephen Sondheim’s Company. In this production, the gender roles were reversed and instead of the female character Amy getting married, we have Jonathan Bailey as Jaime getting married to a man. We will follow that with the beautiful duet “Dance with You” from The Prom. Then we will hear “Mystery of Love” from the movie Call Me By Your Name, and we will conclude with “The Best Thing That Has Ever Happened” from Road Show, Stephen Sondheim’s only gay love song. Here’s the gender reversed “Getting Married Today” from Company.

Today we are listening to songs for Pride Month. Many years ago we saw Cindi Lauper’s True Colors Tour. One of the acts in the concert was Erasure with lead vocalist and songwriter Andy Bell. The Band was absolutely phenomenal and for this set I am going to play two of their songs which were recorded Live in concert. First we are going to hear “Oh L’Amour” followed by “A Little Respect”. Here is the LGBTQ band, Erasure.

We are going to open our third set with Andrew Rannells and company singing “Love Thy Neighbor” from The Prom. Then, Harvey Milk was the first openly gay politician from San Francisco being elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone by former supervisor Dan White. We are going to hear the song “You Are Here” from the musical I Am Harvey Milk. And we will conclude the set with Neil Patrick Harris singing “Wig In a Box” from Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Here’s “Love Thy Neighbor” from The Prom.
