Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Today’s show was pre-recorded.
Today we are going to highlight songs from Broadway musicals that were omitted from the film version. Some of these songs are actually great songs so one wonders why they were left out of the movie. Throughout today’s show we will relate some of the reasons. First, If a movie’s run time is felt to be too long, songs might be jettisoned. Another reason may be that a song might feel “too stagey” and unrealistic when the movie aims for realism.
For our first set, we open with “Me and My Baby” from Chicago. Then we will hear about “Those Magic Changes” from Grease. We will follow that with “I’ve Never Been In Love Before” from Guys & Dolls, a song which was replaced by a far inferior song. And we will end the set with “We Beseech Thee” from Godspell. Here’s “Me and My Baby” from Chicago.

We are playing songs from Broadway musicals that were not included in the movie versions of their shows. There are many reasons for this. In the first set, I gave two reasons. Another reason is that a song might have controversial lyrics or subject matter not appropriate for a general audience. Also, the omitted song might be one that does not advance the plot or help develop a character.
For our second set, we start with “I Was Born On The Day Before Yesterday” from The Wiz. Next we will hear “Paris Original” from How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. We will follow that with “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd” from Sweeney Todd. And we will conclude the set with “The Big Doll House” from Hairspray. Here’s “I Was Born On The Day Before Yesterday” from The Wiz.

Today, we are playing songs from musicals that were left out of the film version of the show. We have also been relating some of the reasons why this happens. Sometimes a different composer gets involved in the production of the movie who installs their own songs in place of some original songs. And some songs in a play are used to cover a transition on the stage. This isn’t necessary in a musical and so the song is cut out.
For our third set, we begin with “That’ll Show Him” from A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum. Then we will hear “No Way To Stop It” from The Sound of Music. We will follow that with “The Art of the Possible” from Evita. And we will end with “No More” from Into The Woods. Here’s “That’ll Show Him” from A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.

Some other reasons why a song might be omitted from the film version is that the actor in the film may have a different vocal range than the song and so a new song is written for the actor. Also, a film can show visually what a stage song was expressing so the song becomes unnecessary.
We are going to conclude our show on songs left out of the movie version starting with “From This Day On” from Brigadoon. Full disclosure, the male singer is my cousin. Then we will hear “Lonely Room” from Oklahoma!. And we will conclude with ”The Music That Makes Me Dance” from Funny Girl. Here’s “From This Day On” from Brigadoon.
We just heard “From This Day On” from Brigadoon, “Lonely Room” from Oklahoma!, and ”The Music That Makes Me Dance” from Funny Girl. The producers of Funny Girl wanted to use Fanny Brice’s signature song “My Man” in the musical but composer Jule Styne had it in his contract that only his songs could be used in the show. That restriction was not in effect in the movie so that the great song ”The Music That Makes Me Dance” was sacrificed for “My Man”. It is a shame that they couldn’t use both for the movie.
And that concludes today’s show on songs “Missing from the Movie”.
