Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and each week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
Today’s show was pre-recorded.
Tomorrow is Labor Day, a day to celebrate workers and unions. Unions gave us better wages, benefits, and working conditions. They gave us the 40 hour work week, the 8 hour work day, the weekend, and the end of child labor. All things to be celebrated.
For our first set, we are going to start with “At the End of the Day” from Les Miserables. This was at a time before there were union protections. We will follow that with “Ooh! My Feet!” from The Most Happy Fella. Then we will hear George Michael sing the Yp Harburg classic song “Brother Can You Spare a Dime”. And we will close the set with the newsies singing their pre-union song “Carrying the Banner” from Newsies. Here’s “At the End of the Day” from Les Miserables.

We are celebrating Labor Day today with songs about workers and unions.
The International Ladies Garment Workers Union created a musical revue, Pins and Needles in 1937 that ran on Broadway for 3 years. The show looked at current events from a pro-union standpoint. In 1962, to commemorate the 25th anniversary Columbia Records released a studio recording which featured a young, pre-Funny Girl, Barbra Streisand. From Pins and Needles, we are going to hear the songs “One Big Union for Two” and Barbra Streisand singing “Sitting On Your Status Quo”. We will end the set with Barbra Streisand and the cast of 1962's I Can Get It For You Wholesale singing “Ballad of the Garment Trade”. Here’s “One Big Union for Two” from Pins and Needles.
