August 26, 2025: Food: a right, a privilege, a commodity

Voices of Reason & Resistance Co-hosts Barbara and Opollo were joined by Ofunmaja from Harambee and Rev. Michael Chaney, minister at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church talk about food insecurity in Savannah and what is being done to bring food to people as a right, not a privilege or a commodity.

Food insecurity is defined as lacking access to enough food for a healthy, active life for one or more members of a household due to limited resources and geographic access.  Many people live in food deserts, where grocery stores selling fresh fruits and vegetables are scarce and public transit is unreliable or non-existent.   This is a zero-sum game--corporate induced price gouging for profit and government cuts in food programs such as SNAP--while poor people, particularly poor people of color, lose access to food.

Until access to healthy affordable is a right for all, here are resources in Savannah for food insecure families:

St. Michaels offers a food pantry on Tuesdays beginning at 8:30 at 3101 Waters Ave and can be reached at (912) 354-7230 or office@saintmichaelsavannah.com

Food Not Bombs provides meals at Wells Park, MLK and 39th Street on Wednesdays and Sundays at 7 pm
