This time of year is very spiritual for me. Spirituality to me is not really religious but there may be a religious component that comes across. Today we will be playing songs, in some way, of Spirituality. The very final song of the show will be one that affected me in a very profound way.
We are going to open with “Day by Day” from Godspell. Then we will hear Anthony Newley sing “Gonna Build a Mountain” from Stop the World - I Want to Get Get Off. We will follow that with Judy Garland singing “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz. And we will close the set with John Rubinstein singing “Morning Glow” from Pippin. Here’s “Day by Day” from Godspell.

We are playing songs today that I find to be spiritual in some way. Those ways are obviously open to interpretation. For our second set, we start with “Hello!” from The Book of Mormon. Then we will hear Stubby Kaye sing “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” from Guys & Dolls. We will follow that with Zero Mostel giving us his “Sabbath Prayer” from Fiddler on the Roof. And we will conclude the set with Ben Platt and company singing “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen.

This time of year is when I feel the most spiritual so we are playing songs that reflect spirituality. For the very last song of the show I will be playing a song that had a particular spiritual affect on me.
Starting off our 3rd set we have Donny Osmond singing “Close Every Door” from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. We follow that with Liza Minnelli contemplating on “A Quiet Thing” from Flora the Red Menace. And we will close out this set with Sammy Davis Jr. telling us about the “Rhythm Of Life” from the film version of Sweet Charity. Here’s “Close Every Door” from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

For our final set of Spirituality songs, and remember there will be one extra song after this set, we begin with Ethel Merman, with the London Festival Orchestra, blasting “Blow, Gabriel Blow” originally from Anything Goes. Then we will hear “Circle of Life” from The Lion King. And we will end with the Finale from the film version of Carousel, Shirley Jones and cast singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. Here’s “Blow, Gabriel Blow”.
You just heard “Blow, Gabriel Blow” from Anything Goes, “Circle of Life” from The Lion King, and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from Carousel.
It was the afternoon of March 12 or 13th, 1987. I fell asleep on my couch with the television on although I didn’t realize that I had dozed off. Eventually, in my own personal darkness of sleep, I heard what I thought to be an angel. I figured that I must have died and an angel was calling to me. His voice grew louder as I gradually awoke from my slumber and realized I hadn’t died. It was the television. The musical Les Miserables had just opened and the Broadway critic on the 6 o’clock news was reviewing it. My angel that pulled me out of my deep sleep was Colm Wilkinson singing this song, “Bring Him Home”.
You just heard “Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables as we conclude today’s show on Spirituality.
