Global James Bond Day

“Well, That’s Show Biz!”

10-05-2025

  • You are listening to [Station ID].

  • Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and this is the show that brings you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.

  • Today’s show was pre-recorded

  • <Play “James Bond Theme”>

  • That of course was Monty Norman’s iconic theme to James Bond first heard on this date, October 5th, 1962 when Dr. No, the first James Bond movie, premiered. That is why today, October 5th, has been designated Global James Bond Day.

  • Today’s show will feature some of the iconic James Bond theme songs as well as a few interesting artifacts of the James Bond movies.

  • We are going to open with the title songs from the first two James Bond movies that my parents allowed me to see. Here is Shirley Bassey with Diamonds Are Forever and Paul McCartney & Wings with Live and Let Die.

  • You just heard Diamonds Are Forever and Live and Let Die representing the first two James Bond movies that I was allowed to see. They also represent the transition between Sean Connery and Roger Moore as 007.

  • Before Sean Connery came back to the role for Diamonds Are Forever, we had George Lazenby as 007 in the ultimately tragic film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Composer John Barry was having trouble writing lyrics to the theme song so the director allowed  an instrumental opening. We are going to hear this theme song as well as Louis Armstrong’s gut wrenching song “We Have All The Time In The World” which plays throughout the movie, the title taken from the last words spoken by Bond to his wife Tracy in both the novel and film. Here’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

  • Today is Global James Bond Day and you just hear the theme to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service as well as Louis Armstrong’s secondary theme “We Have All The Time In The World”. Incidentally, this was Armstrong’s final recorded song.

  • <PSA>

  • Today is Global James Bond Day signifying the date in 1962 that the movie Dr. No premiered.

  • For this next set, we will open with Carly Simon singing the theme song for The Spy Who Loved Me also titled “Nobody Does It Better”. For the movie Octopussy, composer John Barry didn’t think having lyrics that included the title would be appropriate. Lyricist Time Rice submitted 6 potential titles and the title All Time High was chosen. The song was sung by Rita Coolidge. And we will close with Duran Duran performing the theme song to A View To A Kill. Interestingly, Duran Duran’s ”A View To A Kill” is the only James Bond theme to hit #1 on the US charts.  Here’s “Nobody Does It Better”.

  • You just heard “Nobody Does It Better”, the theme song from The Spy Who Loved Me, “All Time High”, the theme song from Octopussy, and the theme song from A View To A Kill as we celebrate Global James Bond Day today on “well, That’s Show Biz!”

  • You are listening to “well, That’s Show Biz!” on [Station ID].

  • Today is Global James Bond Day. On this date, October 5th, 1962, Dr. No premiered. We’ve been playing themes from several James Bond movies.

  • For the movie For Your Eyes Only, the rock group Blondie was asked to provide and perform the theme song. The producers rejected Blondie’s submission in favor of one written by Bill Conti. After Blondie refused to sing this version, Sheena Easton was brought in. Here is Sheena Easton singing the title song from For Your Eyes Only followed by Blondie singing what might have been their version.

  • It’s Global James Bond Day and you just heard Sheena Easton singing the title song from For Your Eyes Only followed by Blondie’s rejected theme for For Your Eyes Only.

  • Next we have a-Ha singing the title song from The Living Daylights, Timothy Dalton’s first entry as Bond. We will follow that with the song “If There Was a Man”, performed by The Pretenders, which was sung over the closing credits. Here’s “The Living Daylights”.

  • Today is Global James Bond Day and it is time to talk a little bit about the movie Thunderball. First we are going to hear Tom Jones sing the title song. He was told to hold out the final note for as long as he could. Rumor has it that he passed out. Jones has said that he closed his eyes and when he opened them that the room was spinning. Johnny Cash wanted to write the title song to Thunderball. We are going to hear his version. And we will close this set out with the song that was originally going to be used as the title song but then rejected, Shirley Bassey singing “Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”. Here’s Thunderball.

  • You just heard Tom Jones with the title song from Thunderball, Johnny Cash singing his “Thunderball” that he hoped would be used as the title song, and Shirley Bassey with the originally recorded but rejected theme song “Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”.

  • We could not end this show for Global James Bond Day without playing perhaps the most famous of the James Bond title songs.  Here’s Shirley Bassey with “Goldfinger”.

  • You just heard Shirley Bassey sing the title song from Goldfinger as we close out today’s show for Global James Bond Day,
