Lets open this second hour of today’s episode of Four Centuries of Great Music, featuring some of the new classical music released in the month of September
Next is a composer you are probably not familiar with, Henriëtte Bosmans. She was born on December 6, 1895 in Amsterdam Netherlands to musical parents - her father was principal cellist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and her mother was a concert pianist and piano teacher at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Her mother taught her piano and faculty from the Amsterdam Conservatory taught her composition. Henriëtte had early success as a concert pianist and composer. In the 1920s she had a romantic relationship with Dutch cellist and conductor Frieda Belinfante, a prominent lesbian, member of the Dutch Resistance during World War II and my cello teacher in the 1960s. Because her mother was Jewish, Bosmans was under the scrutiny of authorities during the German occupation so could not perform nor publish her compositions. But after the war she published everything she was working on during the war. Bosmans died from stomach cancer in 1952, aged 56 years, in Amsterdam. In May 1922, she completed her First Concerto for cello and orchestra which received its initial performance on February 1, 1923 by Marix Loevensohn with the Haarlem Orchestral Society conducted by Bosmans’ cousin Nico Gerharz. A month later, Loevensohn performed the concerto twice with the Concertgebouw Orchestra led by Karl Muck. All of the performances were publicly and critically well received.
