November 25, 2025: Grief and Gratitude

Today on Voices of Resistance, four of us discussed how volunteering and giving back has helped us on our grieving journeys. Kevin and Robert lost spouses recently and discovered that the loss left then sad, lonely and turned to Hospice Savannah's Spouse/Partner Loss Group for help navigating the journey of grief.

In addition to the friendship they found at the group, they also turned to volunteering to ease the loneliness and give back to others.  Kevin continues the travels he made with his wife to bring humanitarian aid to people in countries in Latin America  and also calls hospice patients and their caregivers.  Robert and his wife had been teachers.   Robert talked about how encounters with friends led him to find volunteering opportunities in the schools.   Opollo shared his grief at losing his stepfather, and how his volunteer activities in the Savannah community are a testament to his father and give his life purpose.  I shared my volunteer activities, including bringing back Voices of Resistance, as a way to give me purpose after Albert's death.  We all also talked about how our volunteering is an important way to keep the legacy of our loved ones alive.

We hope that by sharing our stories, listeners who are grieving a loss of a loved one will consider volunteering as a way to find comfort and keep their loved ones' legacies alive.

Next week, we will each answer the following question:   What would you do if you were president for one day?
