When The Moon Sings - January 5, 2019

Here it is, five days into the new year, and P.T. already has muddy footprints all over it.  We start with Eumir Deodato's take on Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathrustra.  Then comes an oldie from Judy Collins, a solo piano piece from Jon Schmidt of the Piano Guys, a cut from the movie A River Runs Through It and much else.

The path from Richard Strauss to Eumir Deodato meanders just a bit.  Strauss originally wrote the music inspired by the book of the same name by Fredrich Nietzsche.  The entire tone poem isn't played much anymore, but the opening fanfare, called Sunrise, was used in Stanley Kubrick's movie 2001:  A Space Odyssey and has become very familiar.  Well after the movie was released, Emilio Deodato decided to do a jazz version of Sunrise.  There's some great jazz work, supported periodically by a full symphony orchestra.  The result is tremendous, but I'm glad the sun doesn't rise as loudly here.
