Music for MLK Day

On January 18, 1986 — 34 years ago to the day — our nation first observed the holiday that honors the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It had been many years and much struggle before the “King-holiday bill” was signed into law, and in 1986 (and even today) not every state was yet on board. MLK Day, as we now know it, was the first federal holiday to honor a private citizen and an African American one at that. Moon takes a brief look back at the history of how the bill came to pass and honors Dr. King through some of the great jazz, R&B, and rock songs of his time.
