Four Centuries of Great Music October 22, 2022 The Symphony Through the Centuries Episode 9

Today on four centuries of great music I am continuing our series of symphonies through the centuries and I have two symphonies from the 2022-23 Savannah Philharmonic Season and two symphonic poems from Franz Liszt.

We are opening with the Brahms Second Symphony which opens the Savannah Philharmonic season on Saturday November 12th.

Brahms’ Second Symphony preserved the structural principles of the classical symphony, in which two lively outer movements frame a slow second movement followed by a short scherzo.  The movements are marked
Allegro non troppo
Adagio non troppo
Allegretto grazioso (quasi andantino)
Allegro con spirito

Franz Liszt:   Symphonic Poem Orpheus

Franz Liszt:   Symphonic Poem Les Preludes

The Savannah Philharmonic season closes on May 6, 2023 with Camille Saint-Saën Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78, The Organ Symphony”

The Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78, was completed by Camille Saint-Saëns in 1886 at what was probably the artistic peak of his career. It is popularly known as the Organ Symphony, even though it is not a true symphony for organ but simply an orchestral symphony where two sections out of four use the pipe organ.

Thank you for joining us today on Four Centuries of Great Music and join us again next week as we continue our series on the Symphony through the Centuries.
