Today on Four Centuries of Great Music we hear symphonies from France and Poland as our 13th episode of the Symphony through the centuries.

We open with Ernest Chausson Symphony in B Flat Major, Op. 20 which which was completed in 1890 and premiered the next year and is in three movements following the form of his teacher and mentor Cesar Frank

Ignacy Jan Paderewski was a Polish pianist, composer and patriot who completed his Symphony in B Minor, Op. 24  Polonia  in 1908 and it was publicly premiered the following year by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  It is in three movements
The three movements are:
Adagio maestoso - Allegro vivace (30')
Andante con moto (17')
Vivace (27').

It is often described as a programme symphony, the three movements depicting:
the glorious days of Poland of the past
Poland of the present day (1907), at the nadir of political subjugation
the approach of a happier future for Poland.[4]
