Four Centuries of Great Music December 25, 2022 The Symphony Through the Centuries Episode 19

Today on Four Centuries of Great Music is Episode 19 of the series The Symphony Through the Centuries.

Today on Four Centuries of Great Music we explore the symphonies of American composers of the 20th Century

We open today’s show with Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2 in D-Flat Major, Op. 30, "Romantic" which was composed in 1930 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  It is in three movements   I. Adagio - Allegro moderato;   II. Andante con tenerezza and  III. Allegro con brio

Next is George Antheil’s Symphony No. 3 - "American" which was written  in 1936-39/revised 1946 and has been described as one of the great American symphonies comparable to the third symphonies of Copland and Harris heard on last week’s 4 Centuries of great music.  It is in 4 movements:   I. Allegro;  II. Andante;  III. The Golden Spike. Andante and  IV. Back to Baltimore. Presto

We open the second hour of today's Four Centuries of Great Music  with William Schuman’s Symphony No. 3.  It was composed in 1941 and many rank this amongst the most potent works of the mid-20th century.  It has two movements:   I. Passacaglia and Fugue   and   II. Chorale and Toccata

We are closing today's Four Centuries of Great Music with Alan Hovhaness's Symphony No.2  "Mysterious Mountain". Composed in 1955, it is the composer's most celebrated and enduring work, remaining in the repertoire of many major American orchestras for almost three-quarters of a century.

We have a little more time in today's show so let's listen to Alan Hovhaness's "And God Created Great Whales".

Join us again next Sunday for the 20th and final episode of the Four Centuries of Great Music series The Symphony Through the Centuries.
