Four Centuries of Great Music August 19, 2023 Music Heard at Tanglewood Music Center this July

Today on Four Centuries of Great Music begins a series of show - highlighting music I heard at the Tanglewood  Music Center in Lenox MA this July.  This includes performances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, Boston Symphony Chamber Player, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, New Fromm Players, Pamela Z, Nicolas Pham, tenor, Jacob Greenberg piano, Pacifica Quartet, Karen Slack soprano, Tanglewood  Music Center Fellows and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Wind Ensemble.  This series of episodes of Four Centuries of Great Music of course is not a complete assemblage of the music heard but a sampling from those concerts.

First today is Dmitri Shostakovich_ String Quartet #2 In A, Op. 68.  It is in four movements 1. Overture;  2. Recitative & Romance;  3. Waltz; and 4. Theme With Variations

At Tanglewood Music Center it was performed on Sunday July 2th by the Pacifica Quartet in Studio E of the LInde Center at the Tanglewood Music Center.

Next is a work performed by the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Wind Ensemble on Sunday, July 16th in Seiji Ozawa Hall and this is Omar Thomas’ work Come Sunday which is in two parts Testimony and Shout.

And we close with Gustav Mahler: Symphony #4 In G.  This is in four movements: 1. Bedächtig - Nicht Eilen; 2. In Gemächlicher Bewungen, Ohne Hast; 3. Ruhevoll and 4. Sehr Behaglich

At Tanglewood this year this was performed on Monday, July 17th by the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra in the Koussevitzky Music Shed.
