January 7, 2025: GA 2025 Legislative Session
Voices of Reason welcomed Rebecca Rolfes, a member of the Savannah League of Women Voters (LWV) on January 7, in advance of the start of the GA legislative session on 1/13/25. The LWV, a nonpartisan, grassroots organization dedicated to protecting and expanding voting rights, began in 1920, just prior to the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. Rebecca discussed the issues the LWV will be following this legislative session that begins 1/13/25: voting reform, responsible gun ownership in the wake of the Winder school shooting, tort reform, legalized gambling, protection of the Okefenokee, and whether transgender girls will be permitted to compete in high school sports. The LWV will follow voting reform measures to assure expansion and protection of voter access and that redistricting creates equitable representational district maps.
The LWV provides important information about elections to educate voters on the issues and where candidates stand on these issues. You can use this link to sign up for the LWV newsletter: Mailing List - League of Women Voters of Georgia.
We said a sad farewell to John McMasters, a guest on VoR in October, 2023 to talk with us in advance of the local Savannah/Chatham County elections, who died in early January. Described as a "hyperlocal," John had an uncontrollable passion for his city and community. John was an advocate for and an example of honesty and integrity in politics. He was an avid surfer, and we shared an intense dislike of leaf blowers. Rest in power, John. Thank you, Jim Morekis, for your tribute that helped me find the right words to say farewell.
