Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The name is a blended word marking the date on which freedom from slavery was announced by the Union Army in Texas, June 19, 1865.
President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had gone into effect on January 1, 1863, but its enforcement depended on the advancement of Union troops. Texas was the most remote of the slave states, so even though the Civil War had officially ended on June 2, 1865, slaves did not know of their freedom until it was announced in Galveston on June 19.-two years after Emancipation
This set off joyous celebrations as former slaves were informed of their Emancipation from their former masters. The day became known as Jubilee Day.
On June 19, 2013, the Tybee MLK Human Rights Organization held a combined remembrance of both Juneteenth and the wade-in acts of civil disobedience which happened in 1960’s to protest Savannah beach segregation. Since 2013 this Juneteenth Wade-In has grown to become an annual event.
In the summer of 2020 the Tybee Island Mayor and Council passed a Resolution Promoting Justice and Equality in which June 19 was designated an official City holiday for perpetuity
